What is science-based dog training?
Science-based dog training is force-free dog training using predominately positive reinforcement methods to train dogs. We rely on modern, updated scientific research to create curriclum and protocols to train dogs and their handlers, rather than anecdotal, usually false, assumptions of how dogs should be trained. We use modern data backed by accredited research, behaviorists, psychologists, credible dog trainers, and scientists. We do NOT use choke collars, prong collars, electronic (shock) collars, or other forms of aversives to manipulate and force dogs to do what we want. We do NOT rely on "dominance theory" to train dogs as it scientifically is not validated and has shown to be a complete misrepresentation of how dogs learn and does more harm than good. We build relationships with our dogs and teach them cues to perform behaviors we want and encourage dogs to do what we want because they want to, not because they are scared of what will happen if they don't. Our dog trainers use methods backed by scientific research and are constantly expanding their repertoire of knowledge.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) states:
"Research shows that dogs do not need to be physically punished to learn how to behave, and there are significant risks associated with using punishment (such as inhibiting learning, increasing fear, and/or stimulating aggressive events). Therefore, trainers who routinely use choke chain collars, pinch collars, shock collars, and other methods of physical punishment as a primary training method should be avoided."
